Alternative PE – Can you help?
Last year, as part of our PE curriculum offer, we introduced alternative sports for all children every other Friday. Through the alternative sports offered, we hope to raise the engagement, exposure and the opportunities for children to apply skills learnt in lessons, across a range of activities and not just the ‘traditional’ sports they are more familiar with.
We have offered many different sports in school so far including; Zumba, ultimate frisbee, boccia, curling, cross country, Aikido, noodle drumming, darts, yoga, cycling and many more! The feedback from the children has been extremely positive and memorable for children and they love the fact that they are able to choose from a range of options.
This year, we have some exciting plans on what sports we offer the children as well as giving them opportunities to build on the skills within the sports by offering some of the more popular sports more regularly.
During the first half of Autumn term, we have Bounce from Horsforth coming into school to lead sessions for all children at Cookridge (the staff are very jealous). We have also organised for some children to attend Bodington Cycle track and for all Year 3’s to have the opportunity to go climbing at The Climbing Lab in Kirkstall. There will also be cross country with some children who take part being able to attend a cross country competition at Otley. In addition to these exciting sports, we will also be offering fencing through a new initiative, ‘We are forging futures’. Fencing will be available for all children and give them the opportunity to progress their skills, resilience and confidence throughout their years at Cookridge.
We are very excited for the year ahead and we are looking forward to hearing the feedback from children, and parents, about their favourite activities. As you will be aware, school budgets are extremely tight and we are asking you, if you can, to help us to continue to deliver this top quality provision. We are aware that times are challenging for all but if you can help we have added a voluntary annual charge for alternative PE on parent pay.
