KS1 – Newsletter – 10.10.24

Remember tomorrow is a training day! We look forward to seeing all the children back on Monday.

English and History have gone hand in hand this week as we read the book ‘Florence Nightingale’. We have listened to her story on ‘Now Press Play’ and acted out the things that she did and the ways she improved hospitals. They all became teachers, when editing sentences all about Florence. They spotted missing capital letters, capital letter ion the wrong place, missing full stops and finger spaces and had a go at correcting spellings.

In Maths, Year One have been focusing on the place value of two digit numbers. They have been using Numicon and Base Ten to represent the tens and ones and have been able to say how many tens and ones are in a number. Year Two one group been comparing numbers using the greater and less than signs and doing investigations. The other group have begun to do column addition with two digit numbers.

Year One have been exploring all the different instruments on the trolley in Music this week. They have learnt the traffic lights symbols for start, stop, play and have begun to look at dynamics. Year Two have been exploring long and short sounds. They have used objects to represent long and short sounds and have then been playing them on instruments.

In Science we have been classifying. We looked at all kinds of animals and classified them into whether they were land and sea animals and looked at the features that would help us decide that.

In design technology, the children have begun to make their lamps for Florence Nightingale. The chopped the tops of bottles and thought about how to stick the tissue paper around it. In food technology the children were making and tasking riata, learning to chop safely and combine ingredients.

Following on from their conversations about creation last week, Year One were learning about how the Christian faith and Muslim faith both talk about Adam being the first man/ prophet in RE. They looked at things that were similar and different in the stories and wondered about why. Year Two were focusing on more of the fundamentals of the Muslim faith. They looked at how they follow the five pillars of Islam, how and when they pray and the importance of the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetime.

The children have been creating spiders web using pastels on black paper this week. They then created their own spiders out of clay and folded/ twisted bits of cardboard. Did you seen then when they came home? We hope they didn’t look too real and scare you!

Year One have been discussing uncomfortable feelings in PSHE. They thought about what things make them feel sad or mad. Having realised these are not nice feelings to have, they thought about things they could do to change how they feel like doing something they enjoy, taking deep breaths, talking to someone about it etc.. Year Two have been discussing what qualifies as bullying and teasing. They have looked at how this can make people feel and have been discussing what they can do if they ever are in that situation.

It has been lovely to end the week recognising Mental Health Awareness Week and seeing all the children in their yellow for the ‘Hello Yellow’ campaign. It has been another good opportunity to talk about who we are, the things that make us happy and the benefit of friends and having someone to talk to.
