LKS2 – Newsletter – 08.11.24
We have finished our first week back after a lovely holiday! We are all refreshed and what a busy week it has been for us.
This week in Geography we developed our knowledge of using a compass. First we identified the four cardinal directions of North, East, South and West and how we can locate these on the compass rose. We then used this knowledge to discover how the four intercardinal directions are formed by bisecting the above, giving: northeast (NE), southeast (SE), southwest (SW), and northwest (NW). We showed our understanding of this by using a compass to direct our partner to the different compass points and then drew a compass on the playground in chalk. We also worked on our atlas and map reading skills. We used the contents to find a map of Europe and had to identify 8 countries in Europe and label them on our own map. Then we followed directions using compass points to label 8 major cities.
his week in LKS2 Reading lessons we used our retrieval skills to identify if statements about the text were true or false. In pairs, we began by dividing a piece of paper in two to sort the statements into. We then identified the key word in each statement and used this to skim and scan for the information within the text. We then discussed the information we had retrieved with our partner to identify whether if the statement was ‘true’ of ‘false’.
In our writing, we started looking at prefixes, suffixes and root words. We discussed how prefixes and suffixes can change the meaning of a root word, and practised adding some prefixes and suffixes using spelling rules. Then we worked as a group to investigate lots of different words. We cut the words up to show the prefix/root word/suffix and labelled each part of the word.
In Science, we started our new topic of, ‘Rocks and Fossils’. We discussed what rocks are, the different types of rocks and how they are formed. We learned about the terms, sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous. We then sorted different rocks into different groups and had a go at making our rocks out of starburst!
