UKS2 Newsletter – 29.11.24

What a fantastic week it has been in UKS2! 

Today in English, the children used Now > Press > Play to further explore the 79AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii. After jumping back in time, the children used the immersive experience to become a survivor of the disaster and how terrifying and hopeless they may have felt when the volcano erupted all those years ago.

This week, the children in UKS2 participated in a Climate Change Day, aiming to educate our children on the urgent and devastating effects of climate change. Rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, and the loss of biodiversity pose significant threats to our world, making it imperative that younger generations are informed and engaged.

We were honoured to have two representatives from the National Grid team visit us, where they facilitated an interactive Now>Press>Play experience, immersing students in the challenges and realities of climate change. This was followed by a discussion time, allowing the children to pose thoughtful questions and gain deeper insights.

Furthermore, our students showcased their understanding through a variety of creative projects, including captivating presentations, music compositions, raps, inspirational speeches, artwork, and dances. Their enthusiasm and creativity highlighted not only their awareness of climate change but also their commitment to becoming champions for a sustainable future.

The children in Class 9 went on a local walk. During this, they focused on creating a sound map of our local area. First, we learnt what a sound map is. Then, they created their own sound map whilst walking around our local area. Finally, we made links and developed our reasoned understanding for the sounds we have found. To do this, they categorised sounds into: biophonic sounds, geophonic sounds and anthrophonic sounds.

Across the week pupils have been developing their your knowledge and understanding of St Andrew, as well as the UK’s other patron saints. Students completed a small reading activity to help remind them who St Andrew was and why he is celebrated. Pupils then worked in pairs and created a presentation on one of the UK’s and Ireland’s other patron saints, including, St George, St David and St Patrick. Once this was completed they had the opportunity to present their work to the rest of the class.
