EYFS – Newsletter – 28.02.25
Bienvenue! We have had a lovely welcome back from half term and straight into our new topic of ‘Around the World’. This week we have been focusing on Europe and enjoying its rich history of food and culture. On Monday we took a look at the history of pizza in Italy and the children were invited to build their own pizzas in Reception’s new wood-fired pizza oven! They were encouraged to carefully read and follow the recipe cards to top their pizzas with the right ingredients and in the correct quantities to please head chef Verdi. Many a pizza had to be scrapped in pursuit of culinary excellence!
To further encourage global exploration, we have opened a travel agents shop in Reception this week and many were inspired to book exciting trips to countries in Europe and beyond. Once their booking had been confirmed the children were guided to write a packing list appropriate for their holiday (hat and scarf for Oslo – suncream and swimming costume for the Costa del Sol). We also got cultured in our creative areas, inspired by great European artists to paint post-impressionist masterpieces inspired by Vincent Van Gogh and to build paper-cut collages inspired by Henri Matisse. Many also enjoyed the challenge of re-creating world flags out of blocks and bricks.
Our guided drawing session this week visited France to take a look at the world-famous Eiffel Tower. The children concentrated brilliantly to draw their own pictures of this beautiful Parisian landmark.
Phonics sessions this week introduced the digraph sounds ‘ar’ (as in star) ‘or’ (as in horn) and ‘ur’ (as in purse). The children have been trying really hard to practise their word and sentence reading to match pictures to writing, as well as writing words and sentences applying their knowledge of these new sounds.
Our Maths sessions this week have been focused on the concept of addition (combining two amounts). The children explored addition by totalling two Numicon pieces, rolling dice to combine two numbers and combining the numbers on a domino tile.
Thank you for sending in so many fantastic photos for our ‘Around the World’ topic. It has been wonderful to share these pictures and have some first hand experience of life in other countries to talk about. The children have loved talking about their experiences and sharing the photos with their friends. We shall continue doing this over the coming weeks so if you haven’t yet found a photo – it’s not too late (can be photos of trips within the UK too, of course!).
Have a lovely weekend!
