LKS2 Newsletter 13/11/20

Happy Friday from the LKS2 team!

We’ve had another fun filled and busy week. Year 3 enjoyed a wonderful Forest School session on Tuesday afternoon. They experienced life in a Bronze Age village and took part in a daily task – providing a meal for the village. Working together, ‘families’ foraged for food, built and lit a fire, mixed ingredients and whittled skewers out of wood. Fortunately, the village pulled together enough and worked hard so that every member of the village would have had enough food for the evening. Year 4 are very much looking forward to having a go in a couple of weeks’ time!

Meanwhile, the Year 4s were inside completing a fun Geography lesson. We looked closely into the seven continents, and identified them on a map. We also started using the 8 compass points to describe the location of different countries. Finally, we explored what an OS map looks like and began to understand how to read one. Using an OS map and grid references, we were able to decode a hidden message.

In PSHE this week, we have been learning all about various feelings, the intensity of these feelings and how to deal with them. We identified a few of feelings that we already know (sad, scared, upset, mad) then listed many different words that are similar to these feelings.  We then used our thesaurus skills to research other words that are similar to the ones we already know. After this, we studied many scenarios and used our new feelings vocabulary to explain how we thought each person in the scenarios were feeling. To end the lesson, we looked into how to deal with unwanted, intense feelings and shared some of our own scenarios together.

This half term, LKS2 are doing Dance in PE. On Wednesday afternoon, we had a lot of fun playing some dance games to boost our confidence. To start, we played the ‘copycat’ game, and the children showed fantastic creativity and leadership throughout! Then we learned how to spot, which is a technique used by dancers to help them focus when they are turning. We practised on the spot, and then progressed on to travelling turns! Finally, we worked in groups to create short routines which had to include some turning to show off our new skills!

Miss Evans’ maths group have tackled column addition this week. They have worked resiliently and become experts in lining digits up correctly, and exchanging when necessary. They have taken part in many fun activities using their addition skills, including using counters and place value charts to help them calculate, and challenging their partners to an addition board game!

We finished off the week with a fantastic topic morning today! First, we learned about the changes in clothes and jewellery from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age, and the children had a go at making their own jewellery from clay! Then we looked at how goods were transported on boats from mainland Europe to Britain. We had to create our own boat with tin foil, thinking carefully about the design to make sure it didn’t sink! Then we tested out their strength by counting how many coins each one could hold.

Reminders

Monday is a PE day, so please remember to send your child to school in PE kit.

More homework has been set for all children on Purple Mash this week. They will have one maths task, one SPaG task and one reading task. These must be completed on Purple Mash by Monday. If your child is having a problem accessing Purple Mash from home, please speak to their class teacher.

Merry Christmas Mr Scrooge!

This year, our school production will be slightly different. Due to restrictions, we are unable to put on a performance in the school hall. Instead, LKS2 have teamed up with UKS2 and we are going to make a film of our show, ‘Merry Christmas Mr Scrooge!’ This will be available for parents to see online. On Monday and Tuesday, we held auditions, and it was wonderful to see so many children showing some real bravery and talent. Today, those children with speaking parts have been given a script with their lines highlighted. Please start learning these straight away!

Have a wonderful weekend.
