EYFS Newsletter – 14/10/2022

Despite the weather starting to get colder, we have not let our spirits be dampened this week in reception!

As part of our all about me topic, we have been looking at the different senses. We tried to identify what was hidden inside boxes based on their smell and texture, and on Friday we had the chance to taste and describe some exciting types of fruit!

In Phonics we have been looking at the graphemes ‘m’, ‘g’ and ‘d’ and the sounds that they make. We have modelled the actions for each phoneme, looked at how to recognise the different letters and continued practising how to blend sounds together to read words. The children had a great time matching words with the correct pictures as well as earning the chance to wear some fancy dress accessories by reading the word on the tag!

In Maths we have focussed on the numbers 1,2 and 3. The children have done a super job sorting and matching up lots of different number representations, as well as demonstrating their understanding by confidently counting different sets of actions and movements.

On Thursday we had forest school. We started by reading the story ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and then had a go at two different activities. One activity was to go up to the field and use natural resources to built houses for some little toy pigs. The other activity was to act out the story on the playground using our special story telling NowPressPlay headphones. After this we talked about the seasons changing and went up to the garden to investigate the different colours we could find. The children collected and sorted objects in the garden by colour and then each created their own nature hunt board to show what they had found.

This week it was mental health awareness week and so we have been doing various activities in class to support this. We have read and discussed a selection of different stories and videos around the theme of feelings, emotions and activities that make us happy!

Please have a look at the link below for a competition from Lidl. “We’re looking for a drawing of what makes your Lidl’uns (under 12 years old) happy, that could be a trip to the park, visiting their grandparents or even a Lidl croissant to support World Mental Health Day! The winning entry will see their drawing and name on one of our billboards outside of our stores across the UK.”
