KS1 – Newsletter – 18.11.22
We have done a number of things linking to our RE curriculum this week, starting with English in Year One. We began looking at a book called ‘A world of festivals’. We learnt about lots of different festivals from around the world and how they are celebrated. We also thought about Festivals that we celebrate and what we do. If you have any photographs of your child at a celebration please send them in to school asap. This could include birthdays, Christmas, Eid, Weddings, Halloween, Diwali etc…
Year Two have been finishing their focus on the Gunpowder plot. After planning their recount, they have been writing it, including as much detail as possible. They have then been learning editing skills, to make corrections and improve what they have written.
In Maths, Year one are learning their Numberbonds to ten. They have been doing a variety of tasks and games to help them with quick recall 9 +1, 8 + 2 etc… Please have a go with them at home. You could give them a quick challenge walking to school or in the car giving them a number and see if they can tell you what goes with it to make 10. Year two have been looking at numberbonds. They have been consolidating their knowledge of Numberbonds to 20. They have also been using their knowledge of Numberbonds to be able to add together three one digit numbers.
In RE Year One have continued to think about festivals. They focused on festivals in the Muslim faith. They learned about the significance of Ramadan and how it is observed. They also looked at Eid and how it is celebrated with gifts, decorations, special foods with family and friends and reading the Qu’ran. We noticed how many of the celebrations were similar to how people celebrate Christmas. In Year Two, the children continued to learn about how we welcome new life. This week, they focused on Christenings in the Christian faith. They learnt about how water or oil is put on the babies head in the sign of a cross, how parents and God parents make promises to the baby and the fact candles are lit and prayers are said.
Art was also linked to RE this week, when the children made Diva lamps linked to Diwali. They created them out of clay and then painted them.
After designing their pitta pockets last time in food tech, the children spent today making their pitta pockets. They practised cutting and grating skills and of course got to eat what they had made.
In Music, Year One have been learning to listen to the music and thinking about how it makes them feel and what pictures would represent the music well. They were choosing Mr Men and Little Miss pictures to show how the music made them feel. In Year Two, the children have begun to read and explore the story of the Nutcracker. They focused on a picture in the book of a house and watched clips of moving around the different rooms and the music that plays in each room.
Finally, in computing, we have continued to learn about which items are ‘digital technology’. This week we were thinking about what items of technology we might find in different rooms in our house eg an electric toothbrush in the bathroom, a television in the living room, an alarm clock in the bedroom. Perhaps you could have a look together at home and see how many other things you can find.
We have had the last of our cinema trips this week. The children have all enjoyed going out with their friends to watch a film together. A huge thank you to Mrs Brosnan for organising it.
