KS1 – Newsletter – 13.1.23

We would like to introduce you to two new faces in Key stage one.

Miss Jordan is a final year placement student teacher from Redkite, based in Class One.

Miss Rosh, is a teacher who is joining us on a Thursday and Friday providing cover in Key Stage One, again, based in Class One.

It’s been all about Boxton the rat from our book ‘Vlad and the Great Fire of London’ this week in Year one. At the beginning of the week we each made a rat out of all the socks you sent in – Thanks for your help! We then wrote sentences about our rats, describing what it looked like and what it’s character is like.

In Year two, the focus has again been on past and present tense. The children have been identifying which word in a sentence would change if the sentence was changed from present to past tense and what it would become.

Year One’s focus this week in Maths has been on teen numbers. They have been looking at a whole variety of ways to represent each number using Numicon, Tens and ones, tally marks, dice spots, words etc.. They have been matching up each number and noticing patterns. Year two have continued with subtracting two, two digit numbers. They have been improving their skills of using pictoral representation on a number on a tens and ones grid and how to borrow from the tens column when there are not enough ones to subtract.

In Science, we have been looking at weather and seasons and how we can tell from a picture what season it is. We looked at a variety of pictures and symbols showing weather and linking them together. We then focused on Autumn and what the weather is like and how we can tell it’s Autumn. We looked at how many daylight hours there are in each month of Autumn and began making a calendar with pictures for September, October and November.

In music, year One were experiencing Winter movements, listening to music and moving with scarves. They then listened to ‘The flight of the Bumblebee music’. They each created a graphic score using flowers, to explore pitch, moving their bee up and down. In Year two, the children began learning about stick notation. They put sticks out in different formation to make different sounds (ice, ice, snowflake, ice) and to explore basic pitch. Why not have a go at home and click on the link below for Mrs Durrants Youtube channel and section on Winter movements:

Each group worked collaboratively in Art this week to make a collage of The Great Fire of London. They created their own tile which was then added to a whole class Art piece. They enjoyed they individual efforts, but were proud to see how it contributed to a much bigger design.

In RE, Year one had fun playing with an Ark. They were learning a story from both the Christian faith, called Noah from the Muslim faith called Nur. They learnt about how pairs of animals were taken onto the ark and kept safe when it rained so much that the earth was flooded. They had fun retelling the story and finding their matching animal to make a pair. Year two began a new topic about Jesus. This week they learnt about how Jesus was baptised and how some Christian grown ups get baptised rather than being Christened as a baby. They also learnt about how Jesus chose twelve special friends to be his disciples and travel around with him.
