Reception have had a lovely week enjoying the sunshine!
Our focus in phonics this week has been words with a ccvc pattern (stop, track, swim). We read and wrote our own sentences using these words and the children were excited to be able to be able to spell out longer words. Outside, the children were tasked with retelling the story of ‘Little Rabbit Foo Foo’ after reading the book. Everyone had a brilliant time taking turns to act out the different characters and demonstrated a good understanding of the key events in the story.
In maths this week we have been exploring odd and even numbers. We looked at what makes a number odd or even and how we can check by putting that number of objects in pairs and seeing if we have one left over. The children also did a super job the spotting repeating pattern within our number system of alternating odd and even numbers. In the reading area we read the story ‘One Odd Day’ and used what we had learnt to draw our own odd or even monsters!
As part of our dinosaur topic, the children have been challenged in the classroom to sort the dinosaur eggs between different ‘nests’ and decide if they have been shared fairly or not. The children have also enjoyed choosing and reading a dinosaur sentence and then sticking pictures above it to show they understood what it said. Elsewhere in the classroom, we had dinosaur skeleton jigsaws being completed, and fossil inspections using magnifying glasses. During forest schools, we continued the dinosaur topic by searching in the sand for bones with letters on and then using them to spell out tricky words.
On Wednesday we had another reading buddy session with the Year 6’s. The children loved sharing books and getting to know the big children!
In an effort to keep cool, we have learnt how to make paper fans, relaxed with some yoga and played with a a little water fountain. The fountain is solar powered and several children spent time investigating where to stand to cast a shadow that turns it off.
To celebrate the end of our year in Reception we are having a summer celebration event on the second to last day of term (Thursday 20th July, 2pm) and parents are invited. There will be music, games, crafts and a short certificate presentation ceremony.
