Christmas has well and truly arrived in Reception this week! Our resident elf ‘Teddy’ has been keeping watch as the children have gotten up to all kinds of fun. We have seen children making some colourful ‘tricky word’ paper chains; paper-cut snowflake decorations and some fabulous printing of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Of course, we’ve also been squeezing in lots of singing practise in anticipation of our Christmas performance next week. If you still haven’t booked tickets and are able to come, please book via the school website.
Our Phonics sessions this week have introduced the digraph (two letters that together make one sound) ‘ff’ (off) and ‘ll’ (bell). These digraphs are typically used at the middle or end of words and the children have had chance to rehearse reading and writing words and phrases with these phonemes. We also practised reading and writing our tricky words.
In Maths, we have been examining and exploring the quadrilateral shapes of square and rectangle. The children have learned the properties of these shapes (four straight edges with four 90 degree corners). The children explored how to identify each shape and determine which was a square or rectangle in different ways, with shape hunts, shape spotting colouring challenges and in building their own pictures from 2D shapes.
On Tuesday, the children enjoyed Music with Mrs Durrant, DT with Mr Joy and Art with Mrs Ledda. Wednesday was P.E. with Mr Kerr, as the children got to explore how their body responds to activity and how the heart works to pump blood around our bodies.
Thank you to all those that were able to come and support out Christmas Fair on Friday last week. We hope that the beautiful decorations you bought have taken pride of place on your Christmas trees at home! The event was a great success and the money raised will go towards making Cookridge and even more engaging and rewarding place for your children to learn.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend!
The Reception Team.
