LKS2 – Newsletter – 09.02.24

It has been a cold but fantastic week in LKS2!

This week in PE, Year 3 demonstrated their knowledge of different Netball throws in a warm up by bounce, chest and shoulder passing to those children who had been tug. We applied the rules of netball by not moving with ball and pivoting to change direction. They then practiced using the shoulder passing method to shoot at the netball hoops! We applied defence and attacking techniques in a small 6 vs 6 game of netball. 

This week in netball, we looked at the skills we needed to lose a defender. We looked at the movement skills needed, such as side stepping, to help us change direction quickly and ensured we kept moving until we lost the defender. We practised in small groups and we played some mini matches of 3 v 3 to apply our new and previous skills. 

In Science, LKS2 put their knowledge of sound waves and volume to the test!
To begin with, we collected out equipment. We used an iPad (with a sound meter app) as our data logger, a meter tape measure and a scrap piece of paper to jot down our notes. First, we split into small groups, found an appropriate space and set up our data logger. Then, the person a who was positioned away from the sound metre made a sound. We recorded the decibel level on our scrap piece of paper. For the rest of our investigation, the same person gradually increased the distance away from the sound metre whilst making the same sound as before. We plotted our findings on a graph. We found that the decibel level went down slightly the further away we got from an object. We realised the background noise sometimes affected the decibel meter therefore we made sure to test again fairly. 

In Maths this week, we looked at recognising and writing decimal equivalents of tenths and hundredths. To start with, children were given fractions and decimals. In teams, they had to match the decimals with the fraction equivalent. They included tenths, hundredths and even some thousandths. Once the team had matched them up successfully, they were given a number line and they had to put the decimals on in order of size. We also looked at tenths and hundredths outside. In our groups, we had meter ruler sticks and we found lots of different sized sticks. We measured the sticks with the meter ruler and wrote the lengths as a fraction and decimal. We challenged ourselves by writing it as a tenth (when possible) and also a fraction or decimal greater than 100.
