EYFS – Growing Food – Forest School

Today in Forest School Reception pupils enjoyed a morning of free flow activities in our school garden area. Children could choose from a variety of things such as playing on the ninja slackline, using mud and paint brushes to write letters and numbers on our outdoor board, creating cakes and mud pies in our outdoor kitchen and exploring our tough tray that was full of mud, water, loose parts and items to use. There was a final activity where pupils began learning about plants and how they grow! To begin with, we used three tyres and filled them with compost to plant a potato in each one. As they grow, we will earth them up using further tyres and compost to create a potato tower! Next, we then planted 50 onion sets in a growing bed, learning that they need space to grow. Therefore, we used a measuring tape to ensure the onions were evenly spaced from each other. Finally, children cleared and prepared a new bed for growing wheat in. They took out weeds and added a layer of compost over the soil. We can’t wait to watch it all grow as the weather warms up over the coming months.
