UKS2 – Newsletter – 15/3/24

We have done lots of fun activities this week in UKS2!

On Monday, we focused on our speaking and listening skills in French, and practiced saying our numbers… up to 1000! In forest school, we all used our teamwork skills to create dens that were big enough for all of our team to fit in/ under, provided shelter for everyone and were able to withstand the weather! In computing, we began to create our own story using Scratch. We added in different sprites, thought about suitable back drops, and followed through various actions to create our story line. 

On Tuesday, Year 5 had a fantastic workshop from Leeds Lieder. We watched a brilliant performance, learnt all about art songs, created our own song together and even practiced singing an art song all together!

On Wednesday, Year 6 were lucky enough to have a visit from Hannah who works for the Leeds United Foundation. Hannah ran a 90 minute session relating to a wide range of areas we cover in PSHE – varying from knife crime to online safety. Our children were able to build on their previous knowledge and explore the effects that gang and knife crime can have on their own and their families lives, as well as the consequences in wider society. The children also looked very closely at how they can ensure they are using their mobiles safely, including how to ensure location services are off when using certain apps!

Hannah was very impressed with our pupils’ knowledge and participation and it was great to see them engage so enthusiastically.

Two lucky pupils even recieved a LUFC keyring and set of headphones for their effort within the session!

This week in maths, Miss Boyd’s group learnt how to round decimals to the nearest whole number and to one decimal place. Miss Barnicoat’s group looked at decimal, fraction and percentage equivalents. Mr Kershaw’s group learnt how to find the perimeter and area of 3D shapes by using multi-link and Mrs T’s group looked at line graphs and pie charts, learning how to work out the mean average. 

We have moved onto our new objectives in English. Year 5 have been learning how to use brackets, dashes and commas to indicate parenthesis, and year 6 have been learning about modal verbs. We introduced our new 3 week block, this time focusing on writing a traditional narrative. We found the features of a traditional narrative at the beginning of the week, and ended the week by coming up with descriptive phrases to describe an intruder who had entered our Amazonian tribe.
