EYFS – Newsletter – 03.02.2023

As February arrives, the days have started to feel a bit less wintry and we’ve been enjoying some more time outdoors in Reception.

Our phonics work has introduced the long vowel sounds ‘ai’ ‘ee’ and ‘igh’ and given the children opportunities to explore hearing, reading and writing this sounds in words and sentences. Playing a snail-themed phonics board game was a lot of fun, as was going outside on a word hunt!

In Maths, we have concentrated on measures, with the children enjoying learning to talk about time. length, height and distances and even to compare and measure things using this vocabulary.

Tuesdays PPA day saw a visit from a badminton instructor in school. Reception were invited to hear all about the sport and then put through some skills and fitness exercises such as star jumps, squats and bunny hops.

Wednesday was National Read-Aloud Day and to celebrate this the children joined up with some children higher up the school to share stories together. We were visited in Reception by some children from Class 6 and each child paired up to read books together.

Our topic of Amazing Animals has seen us exploring undersea creatures, with children enjoying stories such as ‘The Snail and the Whale’ and ‘The Storm Whale’. We were inspired to find out more about whales and learned some incredible facts about blue whales thanks to Sir David Attenborough.

The children also very much enjoyed an opportunity to spend more time with our class pet Tortellini as he came our for some exercise. Then the class were also introduced to some digital animals in the form of the programmable Bee-bot robots and some chose to have a go at setting some directions via the on-board controls.

We hope you all have a restful and relaxing weekend!
