EYFS – Newsletter – 07/02/2020
February got off to a fresh and fun start this week, with a mixture of bright and foggy days. The children took advantage of the sun and spent lots of time outdoors: creating imaginative role play games, constructing golf courses, dancing and singing and digging to Australia!
In Phonics this week, we spent a lot of time thinking about rhyming words. The children created rhyming strings and found rhyming partners in games before practising their writing of rhyming words. This is a great activity to continue out of school, hunting for rhyming words in the house or garden.
In Maths, the children explored finding more and less from a given number as well as naming and describing flat shapes. You could try going on a shape hunt this weekend, looking out for triangles, circles, rectangles and squares.
Some children were lucky enough to be enrolled this week in ‘Flavour School’ where we used our senses of sight and touch to explore different foods. With the aim of encouraging children to be more mindful of what they eat and where their foods come from, it was lovely to see children willing to try new foods and even discovering new foods to enjoy! All children will take part in these sessions, either before or after the upcoming half term break.
Our Forest Schools session on Friday was a chilly and misty affair, but the children still got stuck into digging over our school garden as it prepares for a makeover in the coming weeks and months. The children were also instructed in how to whittle a stick using vegetable peelers, and encouraged to create something imaginative from their whittled sticks – lots of magic wands were soon waving about the place!
We would like to extend an open invitation to all parents and carers of Reception children to join us on Friday next week (14/02) to help prepare our environment for our upcoming topic of Traditional Tales. There are grand plans afoot for castles, enchanted forests, woodland cottages and even a beanstalk! We’re going to need the skills and enthusiasm of our wonderful adults to bring it all to life, so if you are able and willing please join us for all or part of the day.
Next week is the last of the half term, and school will break up for one week’s holiday on Friday. School will open again on Tuesday 25th February as school will be closed for staff training on Monday the 24th February.
