What a full and fun-packed week it’s been in Reception!
We’ve been busy exploring further our topic of ‘Location, Location, Location’ as we’ve looked further at the amenities and landmarks of Cookridge and how these compare with other parts of the country and the world. Some children have chosen to navigate between different Cookridge landmarks on a smaller scale using our class ‘bee-bot’ robots, programming them with a set of instructions to move between places.
As part of this topic, we have took a look at Cookridge Methodist Church and the role it plays in our community. We discussed churches and other places of worship such as mosques, synagogues and gurdwaras and looked at their similarities and differences. There has even been some further work on our shared cardboard model of Cookridge Methodist Church!
The children also enjoyed another guided drawing session this week, as we took a look the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. Everybody put in a lot of effort and there were some fabulous results (see photo gallery below!).
On Tuesday, Reception class greatly enjoyed a cookery session with Mr Joy. Groups of children were able to get stuck in to mixing up batches of flapjacks, which were reportedly very tasty (so tasty that none were saved for Mr Green, sadly).
Wednesday saw Reception visited by a class of Year 5 pupils as part of our reading exchange. This is a lovely opportunity for the children in Reception to practice their reading with some older children and to share books and stories together in a relaxed way.
Phonics sessions this week introduced the last of the Phase 3 sounds: ‘air’ ‘ure’ and ‘er’. These useful sounds were rehearsed in different activities, giving the children opportunities to apply them in their reading and writing.
In Maths this week, the sessions have focused on learning and rehearsing number bonds that make 10 (pairs of numbers that add to make 10). Using practical resources the children have worked to become more familiar with these number pairs to help them become fluent number facts that will strengthen numeracy in all areas of calculation.
Of course, Thursday’s snowfall brought plenty of excitement and joy in Reception. Much fun was had digging, building and sliding about as well as making snow angels and even some sneaky snowballs (most directed at Mrs Phelan!).
Thank you for all your help in sending children with weather-appropriate clothing, as it’s really helped us get out and see the great big smiles on the children’s faces at play in the snow. We hope you all have a fantastic weekend!
