What a brilliant week it’s been in Reception! Our story of the week has been Jack and the Beanstalk, which has inspired lots of great activities and exploration. Children have chosen to create beautiful beanstalk paintings; to craft towering beanstalks using their cutting skills; and to construct a new house for Jack in our D.T. area. The whole class enjoyed a ‘shared write’ to tell an alternative story inspired by Jack’s adventures (just in case you wondered why the children have been talking about Flo and the Drainpipe!).
In Maths this week we’ve been investigating repeating patterns in a variety of ways. The children have looked for and continued patters as well as creating their own patterns with all sorts of materials, inside and out.
Phonics this week has seen us begin to learn and rehearse the start of ‘Phase 2’ sounds. So far we have practised how to hear and identify the short letter sounds ‘s’ (snake) ‘a’ (apple) ‘t’ (text) and ‘p’ (pancake). The children have hunted for these letter sounds in books and listened for them in rhymes as well as having a go at writing them in a variety of places.
Thursday saw us enjoying our fortnightly Forest Schools session, with outdoor activities testing out creativity, resilience, perseverance and teamwork. We created original artworks inspired by our story of the week using a range of natural loose parts (conkers, feathers, sticks etc.) and worked in teams to build a house in the trees using branches, tarpaulins and rope. Of course, another popular activity was getting to spend time with, and help to feed the rabbits and chickens in the school garden.
Besides packing this all in, we have found time for children to choose activities to explore in our areas of provision. As you can tell from these photos the children are loving getting stuck into all kinds of things and really impressing us by challenging themselves in all sorts of ways!
Next week: Reception class have P.E. on Tuesday 19th October and we politely that children arrive at school dressed in their P.E. kit ready for action!
Have a fantastic weekend!
