Well it’s the end of our first half-term in Reception! What a great time we’ve had getting to know one another and beginning our learning journeys together. All the staff have been so impressed by how fantastically the children have all settled into school life and how they have adapted to new routines and expectations. It has been wonderful to watch friendships blossom and to see children grow in confidence as they have explored all that Reception has offered.
The beginning of the week took in the classes fortnightly sessions of Art, Music and D.T. with the children enjoying the chance to get involved with some spooky Halloween activities (and even beginning to look at our forthcoming Christmas production – I know!).
Speaking of Halloween, it was Cookridge’s spooky Autumn Disco party on Tuesday after school which was enjoyed by many in Reception. It was great so see all the amazing costumes as the kids played, dance and sang with their friends.
As the week progressed (and the weather worsened) we got on with our learning. Phonics sessions this week were spent revisiting and consolidating the phonemes we have learned so far to help them be better recalled after half term break. The children took part in activities listening for and recognising the letter sounds in different words; distinguishing between sounds in words; and using these sounds to build and spell simple words. We have been blown away by the effort and progress we have seen so far this year!
In Maths, we have again spent time consolidating our previous learning around the numbers 1, 2 and 3. The children have explored different ways to construct (and deconstruct) these numbers and how to recognise and count these numbers in various ways.
Though the inclement weather has kept us indoors more than usual this week, the children have also enjoyed making cars in the D.T. area; painting portraits in the creative area and visiting the sensory table to test their senses.
Thank you to all our wonderful parents and carers who have helped make the children’s transition to school life so enjoyable. We hope you all enjoy the half-term break and we look forward to seeing everyone back in school on the 31st!
