EYFS – Newsletter – 22.11.24

At the end of a frosty week we’d like to share with you some of what we’ve been up to in Reception.

As we continue our Toytown topic, we have gone back in time to look at toys from history and compared these to the more modern-day toys that the children are familiar. There has been a selection of traditional toys such as ‘Snakes and Ladders’, dominoes, marbles and a spinning top for the children to enjoy, as well as some more flashy (and loud!) toys like talking action figures, remote controlled vehicles and light-up transformer cars. We spent time talking about what these toys are made off and how they are powered to discover that the older toys were mostly made of wood, metal and glass where as the newer toys are made from moulded plastic and powered by batteries.

We watched a video depicting how children have played with variations of the ‘Cup and Ball’ toy for hundreds of years and how they would have originally been carved from wood. The children all then had a chance to make their own ‘Cup and Ball’ toy with which to play.

On Friday, Miss Walsh continued sharing with the class some more toys from other cultures around the world. This week we looked at the traditional Japanese ‘Daruma’ dolls, which act as a good luck charm that you can tell your dreams and goals too. The children also got to take a closer look at where Japan is in the world by using Google Earth on the big screen, and even learned a traditional Japanese dance called Tankobushi!

In Phonics this week. we have learned the phonemes ‘r’ (robot) ‘h’ (house) and ‘b’ (ball). The children have engaged in fun activities to rehearse their reading and writing of these sounds in words and sentences.

Maths sessions this week have seen the children further exploring the numbers 4 and 5. We have engaged in activities to investigate the composition of these numbers and how they can be broken down and built up in different ways and represented in many forms.

On Friday this week, it was Takeover Day in school, so all of the Reception staff were shadowed by a pupil from year 6. The Reception children loved having some extra bodies helping us along – especially Paisley whose brother Charlie was Mr Verdi for the day!

Have a great weekend!
