Key stage 1 – Newsletter – 4/10/19
Despite the weather, we’ve had another fun week in Key Stage 1!
Year 1 have been wondering why the sky is blue. They completed an experiment in the classroom with water and a drop of milk in a glass. They were wowed by the fact that when they held a bright torch on the glass the liquid looked blue and when they held a dim torch, they saw orange like a sunset!
Fantastic parachutes were made by year 2. After thinking about ways they could make them float better, they constructed parachutes and dropped them off the balcony to see which ones floated down the best.
Year 2 have begun reading ‘Zog’ this week. They have been learning about all the things he struggled with and have been writing him encouraging letters not to give up and giving him advice on how he could improve.
In maths, Year 1 have been reading numbers in numerals and words and matching the two together. Year 2 have been comparing numbers using < > =, playing top trumps and using base ten.
In Geography we have been exploring the school grounds, looking for human and physical features. We used aerial maps to label different parts of the school grounds and what it is used for.
In RE, Year 1 have been reading stories from faith backgrounds and thinking about the moral. This week, we looked at the story of The Good Samaritan and thought about how we could be kind and look after those around us. Year 2 have been focusing on rules and why we have them. They learnt about the five pillars of Islam and why they are important to Muslims.
