KS1 – Big Garden Birdwatch – Forest School
This weekend it is the RSPB’s 26th Big Garden Birdwatch and it’s the world’s largest garden wildlife survey- over 600,000 people took part in 2024. In preparation for this, KS1 pupils have been learning all about birds today in their Forest School sessions. Pupils have led their own learning by choosing to make bird fat balls using lard and bird seeds with string attached to hang them from trees to feed our feathered friends an energy boosting snack. We also looked at a Blue Tit nest and a Blackbird nest, discussing how they were made and the features of them. Children then had a go at making nests too and realised just how hard it was! Pupils also made their own charcoal paint and used sticks to paint their own bird pictures, including finishing a robin picture whilst some pupils chose to sit and birdwatch in the school grounds where they spotted familiar garden birds including blue tits, robins and a wren made an appearance! The final activity involved learning about some common garden birds and their coloured markings. Pupils could choose one and do some mindful colouring where pupils had to match the colours of the birds, taking care to study the colours of each individual bird!
