KS1 – Newsletter – 13.12.24

What a great week we have had in Key Stage one, performing our show for the school, then the parents and finally singing some of the songs outside Asda. We are so very proud of all the children and we’re sure you are too. Thank you for all your support in attending these events and helping your children to practise and prepare for them.

Despite all the fun of the play, the children have still been working hard and have written some fantastic adventure narratives this week. They have been writing about an adventure their elves have taken and then published it for their folder. Year One have been learning the phonic sound /ir/ for bird and Year Two have been adding suffixes -ed and -er.

In Maths, both Year groups have been working with 3D shapes. They have been identifying and naming the shapes. Year One have then been sorting them, looking at which ones can stack and roll and using them within patterns. Year Two have been looking more at their properties, for example how many faces, edges and vertices they have and naming the faces.

We had the ‘Now Press Play’ headphones out for Science this week. We were building on the knowledge we learned last week of what humans need to keep themselves healthy.

In music the Year One’s have been making picture scores – They have matched symbols to sounds and played them on percussion instruments. Year Two have continued with the Nutcracker story and this week have been focusing on the Chinese and Arabian dances. They responded to the music through movement.

In art, the children were given a yellow diamond. From this, they had to use their imagination to think what it could become. They then used different art techniques to transform it into something different.

In food technology, the children have been Christmas cake pops! After measuring out the ingredients, they have practised the creaming method to combine the sugar and butter. They decorated their cake pops with Christmassy sprinkles.

Year One were learning about the Christmas story in RE. They thought about things that were the same and slightly different from our Christmas play. They learned Jesus was born at Christmas and Christians believe that he was the son of God. Year Two were learning about the Aqiqah. They heard how when a baby is born they are given something sweet to taste and the call to prayer is whispered in their ear. They also learnt how the Aqiqah happens 7, 14 or 21 days after the baby is born and meat/ money is given to the poor.

Year One have been thinking about having a positive mind set in PSHE. They have thought about the difference it can make when they believe in themselves, when they have a go and when they choose not to give up. Year Two, have been looking at jobs again. This week they were looking at how jobs do not need to be gender specific and that they could go into any job they want. For example, boys can be nurses and girls can be scientists.

Special request: If your child has any clean pants/ socks/ tights that they have grown out of and you would be happy to donate to school, please send them in. We would really appreciate it
