We’ve made it everyone! HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

Our focuses this week have all had a Christmassy twist. In English we have been reading different stories about Santa’s elves. Year one thought about what job they would like to do if they were an elf, giving themselves an elf name and thinking about what good or naughty things they would do if they were visiting a child’s house. They also practised putting their phonics into the story and sequencing the story. Year two wrote their own adventure story about an elf and what he got up to. They were making sure they had detail and adjectives along with asking questions. They then edited their story and wrote it up to publish it.

We have done lots of shape work across the phase this week, looking at both 2D and 3D shapes. We have named them and been identifying them by their properties. Have a look around your homes and see if you can identify any of the shapes. Look at those Christmas presents, how many are cubes and cuboids? Year two also consolidated their knowledge of subtraction.

Of course in RE, we have been learning about the Christmas story. In Year One the children watched the story and ordered pictures of what happened. They then wrote a sentence of two, to tell what happened in the story. Year two were finishing off their topic on how we welcome babies, by looking at how Jesus was welcomed. They wrote the Christmas story, telling of how angels announced Jesus’ birth, how the Shepherds wanted to go and visit him and how the Wise men took him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Year One were learning about percussion instruments this week and naming them correctly. They looked at the different noises they make and how they ca be used. Year two were finishing their work on the Nutcracker making their own rhythm board. They also had the pleasure of listening to Mrs Durrant playing some of the music from the Nutcracker on her violin.

In Art, the children were trying to work out who’s house the picture is from the clues. They were then hiding pictures of the elves and colouring the picture.

Key Stage One was filled with the smell of Gingerbread, as the children made star biscuits. They learned some new skills of rubbing in, kneading and rolling out the dough. They also designed a pattern to go on the top. In the other section of DT, the children were evaluating their candles and how they were made.

Finally, in computing, we have been thinking about how technology is used in the work place. We looked at how technology might be used by a teacher, or a nurse and a policeman. We realised some technology is used in most work places like phones and laptops, but some specific technology is used in certain jobs like a heart rate monitor or an electric drill.

The term has all been finished off today with our parties and a fabulous Christmas dinner. So only one last thing to say, We hope that you all enjoy a fabulous two weeks off with your families and we look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.
