KS1 – Newsletter – 21.10.22
Happy Half term everyone! It’s been a busy one, but the children have been fantastic and we’ve had great fun learning together.
It was lovely for the children to have fun at our Autumn disco on Thursday. Thank you to all those who arranged it and came to help, along with everyone who bought a ticket and helped to raise some funds. Here’s a little snap shot of the evening:
We have enjoyed a whole variety of forest schools activities this week. We had our forest schools session, but we have also been out and about exploring both in Maths and Science. In our forest schools session, we were looking for natural materials to make different animals. In Science, we did a scavenger hunt, to find lots of Autumnal items such as conker shells, brown, yellow and red leaves and seeds. We then took lots of these objects back to the classroom to make autumn crowns.
In English, Classes 2 and 3 focused on a poem called Autumn fires. Year One looked for the rhyming words within the poem and thought of some of their own to go with them. Year two did a comprehension around the poem. All the children took a line of the poem and rehearsed and then performed the poem as a class. Class 1 were reading ‘The Witches kitchen’. They were looking for rhyming words and spotting phonemes. They also created their own witches recipe.
In Maths, we have all been looking at greater than and less then. They children have been learning about the < > = signs and have been using these in a whole variety of activities comparing numbers. They also did this in the garden area, creating amount of leaves or acorns to compare, using lolly sticks to make the signs.
Our history objectives this week were focusing on looking at evidence and sources to represent the past and using words such as old, new, modern etc.. we compared photographs of the Queen, one from when she was a child and one from her Platinum Jubilee. We noticed that one was in black and white, with old fashioned hair and clothes. The other was in colour, the Queen was an older lady and there was lots of modern technology being used such as lights, speakers, screen and mobile phones.
Year two have been completing their topic on friendship in PSHE this week. In year one, we have been doing SRE and looking at parts of the body. We have been naming and labelling all the parts of the body, using the correct, scientific terms and discussing the ‘pants are private’ rule.
Unfortunately, our local walk of the area had to be postponed, but we will be re-arranging this at some point after the half term.
Thank you all for your continued support, especially with reading. Please continue to listen to your child reading over the holiday and read to them too. Sharing books with your child is invaluable, for social time, but also for hearing what a story should sound like, learning new vocabulary and just simply enjoying a book.
Please also Remember Mrs Koopman’s daughter’s fund raising event!
