KS1 – Newsletter – 24.10.24

It has been a brilliant half term in Key Stage One, but we’re sure everyone is ready for a break. Have a wonderful week together and we will see you all in November!

In English we discovered some brilliant actors, as we role played scenes in a restaurant where they were not happy with the food! Together we then constructed a letter of complaint to the restaurant. We have also been working on asking questions, looking at question words and the sorts of things we could ask. The children then read sentences and decided whether they were questions or statements and whether they should be finished with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. To finish the week, we used ‘Now Press Play’ to listen to the story of the Gunpowder plot. Everyone then created a story board to show what happened in the story.

History of course was linked with English and learning about the reasons behind why we mark 5th November in the way we do. We will be continuing with this story after half term and learning more about the characters such as Guy Fawkes and Robert Catesby in more detail.

Year One have been learning about numbers in words this week. Through a variety of games and activities, they have been learning to read and spell numbers in words. Maybe you could practise at home! Year Two have been working on word problems. One group have been using their numberbond knowledge and the other group have been doing general addition.

Both Year One and Year Two have been singing songs and playing games related to Halloween in music. They made a picture score using spooky images and then played them on percussion instruments.

In Food technology, the children have been making cinnamon biscuits. They have been reading and following a recipe, weighing out ingredients and using a rubbing method to create delicious biscuits. In design technology, the children were continuing their Florence Nightingale lamps, adding more colourful shapes and detail.

Believe it or not, Christmas is on the way! After beginning to learn some of the songs and having auditioned for speaking roles this week, the play rehearsals will be well underway after half term.  In art, the children have been designing their own Christmas card. They will have brought this home for you to have a look at and if you would like to order any packs of cards, please ensure you complete the form and send it back in to school asap.

In PSHE, Year One have been thinking about situations where they may have strong feelings. They looked at the story of the suffragettes and how they spoke up for what they believed in. They then thought about how they could express their feelings even when it feels trickier. Year Two focused on times that they fall out with friends. They thought about what might make them fall out with friends and more importantly, what strategies they could use to sort it out.

We have of course ended the week with our fantastic alternative sports session. One group joined in with Boogie Bounce, one group enjoyed crazy bowling and the final group exhausted themselves with noodle drumming – it’s a better work out than you think!
