Seeing the sunshine has definitely made us all feel happy in Key Stage One this week!

The children have all been spotting the difference between nouns and adjectives and using them in sentences in English. Year One have been learning about the pre fix -un. They have noticed how the un- prefix changes the word to mean the opposite and have been writing sentences to reflect this. Year Two have been practising and using expanded noun phrases and using them in their sentences. Some of the Year One children also visited the care home on Thursday to read to the residents there. This was a good confidence booster for some and great practise for them as they enjoyed sharing their book.

We had a fabulous experience this Friday morning, when we had a theatre visit in school to perform a play for Key Stage one around pirates. We heard some stories about famous female pirates and adventures they went on, along with songs and props. The children were all quite entranced!

In Maths, Year One have been learning about capacity and volume. They have used basic language of full, half full, empty and nearly full/ nearly empty. They have compared the capacity of different containers and thought about which ones could hold more. They have also worked out how many cups would fit into another. In Year Two, one group have finished their multiplication work and have begun looking at measurements. They have looked at measuring in length, weights and capacity. The other group have continued with division, focusing on inverse relationship with multiplication and the reasoning about it.

During the Forest schools session, the children were able to go and experience the outdoor classroom for the first time. They have learnt about using the special outdoor composting toilet and throwing in sawdust etc.. They then worked in teams to create dens using the big tarpaulin and ropes.

In design technology, the children have been adding wheels using dowl axels to their fire engines and added wheels. They have also been attaching their lolly pop ladders to the top. In food technology, the children made salmon mousse, using cream cheese, dill, salmon and lemon juice. They have used cutting and squeezing skills for the lemons, chopping the dill and mixing to combine it all. They then tasted the mousse on crackers.

In Art the children have been thinking about which colours are primary colours and which are secondary. They then created colour wheels, placing primary colours on the top. When spinning them, it mixed the colours together, hopefully to create the secondary colours on their paper.

The children had great fun in music with pasta! Year One have been learning about long and short sounds. They used spaghetti for long sounds and penne for the short sounds to make patterns to play. Year Two have been learning the clapping song ‘Pease pudding’ and then created their own hand jive to Elvis Presley’s ‘Hound dog’!

It has been all about Easter in the RE lessons this week. The children have been learning about the events of Holy week, from Jesus having a meal with his friends on Thursday, to dying on Friday and being raised on Sunday. They have looked at ways that people celebrate and mark Easter through services, putting crosses on hills, sending Easter cards and making Easter gardens and bonnets.

We have once again ended the week with our alternative PE. The final group from Class 3 got to experience fencing while the rest of class did Go Noodle. Class 2 were doing yoga and Class 1 were doing classroom Foosball.
