KS1 – Newsletter – 29.11.24
Thank you to all the parents and carers who came into school (or spoke to us on the phone) for parents evening this week. It was brilliant for us to be able to share how well your children have settled into school and show you some of what they have been doing.
The children have enjoyed beginning to learn about adventure narratives this week and have listened to a variety of stories. They had a go at writing their own adventure story. They have also been working on their spellings and spelling patterns. Year One have focused on the phonic sound /c/ for city and /ch/ for chef. Year Two have been focusing on /el/ for tunnel and camel (very apt for our play!)
Year One have been consolidating their counting skills and their ability to compare numbers. This week, they have focused on ordering numbers, and numbers that are not consecutive. Eg putting four numbers in order starting with the smallest eg 11, 24, 45, 63. They have also begun to put numbers onto a numberline with only a starting and ending number. One group in Year Two have been furthering their knowledge of subtraction through reasoning problems. They have been reading word problems and thinking what they need to do to solve the problem using column subtraction.
We have continued to look at nurses in our history sessions this week. Having found out lots of facts about Florence Nightingale and now Mary Seacole, we began to compare the two. We thought about things that were the same about both of them eg they both helped in the Crimean war and things that were different about them.
In RE, Year one were learning about Christian festivals. They have learned about Harvest, Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. They thought about how each of these festivals are celebrated and why. Year Two continued learning about how we welcome babies. This week, they looked at how babies are welcomed in the Christian faith. They learnt about Christenings, how the baby is taken to church has water/ oil put on their head and made into the sign of the cross.
Year One have read the story of ‘leaf man’ in music and have made rhythmic patterns using sticks, conkers and leaves. Year Two have carried on with the Nutcracker and today they have been looking at the Russian dance. They then choreographed their own routine for the dance.
The divas were painted during art lessons this week, thinking about colours and patterns. The children also created some angel tree decorations for the tops of their Christmas tree.
In food technology the children were making pitta pockets. They have been grating cheese and using the claw and bridge holds, to cut up salad to add to their pitta pockets.
Year One were thinking about acts of kindness in PSHE. They thought about ways that they could be kind to their friends, family and others around them in school etc.. Year Two were thinking about on line safety. This is a topic we cover a lot in computing and therefore this was a good consolidating lesson where they made an on line safety poster to show all that they know.
