KS1 – Newsletter – 3.2.23
We’ve had another lovely week with the children in Key Stage One this week and they are all really impressing us.
In English this week, year one have really blown our socks off! We have been using our book and looking at writing up an account of what happened during the Great Fire of London. The children have written some fantastic pieces of work remembering so many facts supporting our historical learning. Year two were getting tuck into their ‘Vlad and the Great Fire of London’ book this week and have begun to write an adventure story of their own involving Vlad the flea. They have been practising using the correct tense throughout a piece of writing.
All this reading and writing about The Great Fire of London has been supporting our history topic throughout the term. This week, we focused specifically on one of the people who features during the Great Fire, Kind Charles II. The children used a variety of documents, timelines and factfiles, to find out different information about King Charles and specifically about his role in 1666. We heard how he made a declaration that houses must be pulled down to save more houses being lost and how he made a speech thanking the people of London for their efforts in trying to put out the fire.
We of course had our fabulous forest school session this week too, thinking about how the houses in 1666 were made. We discussed how wooden houses would have been constructed and what ‘wattle and doab’ is. The children then had a go at making their own houses using sticks and mud and created some mud pictures.
In Maths Year one have been doing slightly different things. One group have been focusing on subtracting using part whole models and numberlines. The other group have been learning how to double numbers in a variety of ways. Year two have continued to look at addition and subtraction and have been focusing on the inverse operation.
Our Science topic has continued as we looked at the winter months and what they are. We thought about how many day light hours there are and what the trees look like and wat the weather is like. We then made the next few pages of our calendars.
We have furthered our knowledge and understanding of the compass points in Geography this week. We have been using this knowledge to move around a picture grid. The children had to start at a given point and move an amount of squares North, East, South and West and write about where they landed.
We all have a fabulous time with a badminton coach who came into school this week. There were lots of fun activities and different things to get us moving. The school had amazing feed back from the coaches about how much they had enjoyed their time here because of the fantastic participation of the children and their exemplary behaviour.
