KS1 – Newsletter – 4.4.25

We have had a fantastic final week of this term in Key Stage One. Red team had a great day out at the Big Swing for their reward on Wednesday. It was amazing to see so many of you for our celebration event of all the things we have been doing around our topic of The Great Fire of London. We hope you enjoyed seeing the culmination of all the children’s hard work, as they have really enjoyed learning about the events of 1666.

It has been our final week of The Great Fire of London topic and our hot write in English reflected this. The children wrote their own descriptive narrative, using the characters of the rat and flea from the book ‘Vlad and the great fire’. Year One worked hard to include words with the un- prefix such as unsafe and Year Two concentrated on including expanded noun phrases, such as ‘tiny, burning embers…’ They have then published this work for their folders and had it displayed for the parent’s event.

Forest schools also helped us to close off our Great Fire of London topic as we burned the houses that the children had created. We were fortunate to have a warm, dry and sunny day – just like it was in London in 1666. The wind even put in an appearance to help spread the fire across the rooves of the houses!

In Maths, Year One have begun counting in tens. They have practised recognising and counting groups of ten and answering reasoning questions about this. They have also been writing counting in tens sequentially, simply ordering tens, but also counting in tens from any number eg 4, 14, 24, 34, 44…. Year Two have had a week of consolidating the knowledge and skills they have learnt in maths this term. They have enjoyed playing games and doing reasoning tasks, to show their understanding.

In Geography, the children have been recalling everything they have learnt over the last term about The United Kingdom. They were able to recall the four countries, their capital cities and the waters that surround the UK. They could also recognise and match the flags of the UK to their country and remember some key facts about the countries in the UK such as Buckingham palace is in London and that Belfast is near the sea.

We had great fun in computing using the ARMakr app again. This time we took photos of the rats we had made. We then built out own version of London using wooden blocks and kapla. We then inserted out photo of our rat into the AR world of London we had created.

Throughout this half term we have also been designing and creating an outfit to fit on the mannequins. We have taken inspiration from our Science topic on the seasons. Class 1 created theirs around a winter wonderland, Class 2 created theirs around an Autumn woodland theme and Class 3 did Summer sunshine burst. During assembly time this morning, the children showed off their creations to the school, explaining how we made each part. We used a whole variety of skills from sewing, threading, weaving, printing, painting, cutting and plaiting.

Happy Easter to you all and we hope that you all have a great holiday from school.
