KS1 – Newsletter – 6.12.24
We would like to say a huge THANK YOU, to everyone who sent in items for the Christmas Fayre and who came along to support it. You are the ones who make it the great success it is and helps us to raise money for school funds. We really appreciate all your donations and support.
With great excitement, we have welcomed three elves into KS1 on Monday morning. The children enjoyed thinking of and voting for their names. So we have Crackers, Jingles and Jingle Bells making themselves known in the classrooms. We hear many of you are having fun with elves at home too!
In English, we have used our elves as an inspiration. First the children created a profile for their elf, thinking about it’s likes and dislikes and also describing it’s features and characteristics. Everyone then had a go at writing an adventure narrative including their elf, thinking about where it would go and what it would do. In phonics Year One were learning about /ch/ making the /sh/ sound as in chef. Year Two were learning the sounds /al/ as in canal and /il/ as in fulfil.
It has been all about 2D shapes in KS1 this week in Maths. Year One were focusing on the names of the shapes and identifying the main properties of the number of sides and corners and whether the sides are straight or curved. Year Two have also been naming shapes and properties and have added extra vocabulary such as quadrilaterals. They have also been looking at the lines of symmetry on each shape.
We completed a carousel of activities in Science, helping us to think about how to keep our bodies healthy. We used the ‘Eat well’ guide to create a balanced diet and thought about what foods we should eat every day. We played a bingo game including lots of ways we can ensure good hygiene and looked at where plaque builds up on our teeth and how to keep them clean. We also did 1 minute burts of exercise to see how many push ups or star jumps we could do, recognising the need for our bodies to have exercise but also good rest every day.
In RE, Year one have been learning all about Advent. They have learned about what the term means and have been looking at ways people ‘celebrate’ advent at home and in churches. They have looked at a whole variety of Advent calendars people may have in their homes and Advent wreaths and Christingles that Christians use in churches.
We have been building on our knowledge of algorithms in computing and understanding the need for precise instructions. The children had a grid with a variety of objects on it and they had to write the instructions for how to get from one object to another using forward, left and right and noting how many spaces they needed to move.
Both Class 1 and Class 3 were able to complete their local walk for Geography this week. They discussed features in the local area such as trees, buildings and hills etc.. but also looked at what the buildings were used for and why they were needed for our local area. We have also been using maps to think about how we can get from one country to another. In order to do this we have been using the compass directional words North, South, East, West, North East etc…
Year One began looking at bullying in PSHE. They thought about what it means to bully and how it makes people feel. It helped them to recognise when their actions or the actions of others could be bullying and what they should do about it. Year Two were thinking about what they might like to do as a job when they get older and why. They discussed what skills they would need to be able to do each job.
