KS1- Newsletter – 6.3.20

We have had a fantastic week from start to finish in Key stage 1.

It all began on Monday, with our Pirate DT day. We designed our own pirate ships, ensuring they had at least a deck, a mast and a sail. We had to think carefully about the materials that we wanted to use. They needed to be fit for purpose, eg a flexible sail and the boat had to be able to float.

Once we had designed the boats, we made them using the materials we had chosen. We then used further DT skills to add an anchor that could be raised and lowered using a wheel system and Year 2 added pulleys to raise and lower a flag. We then completed a review of our boats and their pulley systems and how effective they were.

In Science, we used all the different boats in a floating and sinking activity. We looked at how the boats had been made, what materials were used and were able to decide which were the most effective and why. For the boats that were able to stay afloat, we added coins on the top, to see exactly how strong and sea worthy they would be.

On Thursday we had great fun celebrating World Book Day. We started off the day with a Mystery Reader in each class, followed by an assembly where we saw Teachers V Pupils in a book quiz. Our focus for the day was Mr Men books. We read various stories, designed our own Mr Man, decorated our potatoes to look like Mr Men and wrote a books review of our favourite story. It was amazing to see all the different characters the children had chosen to come as.

We have ended the week with Forest schools, developing our knowledge of the continents, their place on a map and their size. We took maps up to the field and found a whole variety of objects to represent the different continents and name the correctly.
