LKS2 – Newsletter – 06.01.20

What a busy first week back LKS2 have had! We have been on many trips and had lots of fun.

This week in maths, Year 4 have been learning how to do short multiplication. We have been learning different strategies and working hard to challenge ourselves with larger and more complex numbers.

Miss Evans’ maths group have been working really hard on column addition and subtraction of numbers with 3 digits. We used counters to help us visualise each step of a calculation. Then we moved on to harder calculations where we had to exchange.

In Miss Briscoe’s maths class this week, we have been investigative the properties of commutativity and associativity using art, games and computing to support our learning.

In English this week, we have been recapping and learning various aspects of spelling, punctuation and grammar. We have been testing our knowledge and reflecting on what we have learnt.

In French this week, LKS2 have learned how to have a short conversation! We can say hello and goodbye, and we also learned how to say how we are feeling. To help us with this, we made paper plate faces which showed different emotions, then practised saying the feelings with our partner. For example, a sad face is ‘ca va mal’ and a happy face is ‘ca va tres bien!’.

In science we started our new topic, Light! We learned that light travels in waves, and we need light and our eyes to be able to see objects. We investigated how light can travel through translucent objects like a plastic cup, but not through opaque objects like paper.

In PSHE this week, LKS2 have been continuing their discussion on emotions and feelings. We looked at how we can feel different emotions at any given time and that these emotions can vary depending on the situation.

On Wednesday, 24 Year 4 pupils took part in a swimming gala at Holt Park Active Centre. They competed against pupils from 3 local primary schools in a variety of races, from the egg and spoon race, to body boarding and ping pong. Well done to all the pupils who participated in these races. Also, 7 pupils were picked for our water polo team and competed in a competition at the deep end and WON! It was a great team performance, with every player contributing towards the team’s success. Congratulations to Nicolo (3 goals), Joseph (1 goal), Lilly (3 goals), Isobel, Lucy, Esther and Lillia.
