LKS2 – Newsletter – 18.11.22

We’ve managed to have a great week in LKS2 despite the rain!

Before we tell you more about our week, here are our spelling shed words for next week:

Y3: re- prefix

redo, return, refresh, redecorate, reappear, revenge, review, replay, reaction, rebound

Y4: -ation suffix

information, sensation, preparation, vibration, decoration, donation, duration, registration, population, determination

Please encourage your child to use spelling shed at  home and also complete the worksheet which has been sent home today. Thank you for your continued support with homework.

On Monday, it was PPA day, which meant music, art, RE and design technology. The children who are doing food technology this half term got to make parmesan chicken nuggets! This has involved designing the food, and closely following a recipe, measuring out ingredients and ensuring they are using their health and safety knowledge. The children all had very positive reviews – we wish they’d saved us some!

We had a very exciting trip this week, to the cinema. Y3 went to The Light in Leeds whilst Y4 visited Cottage Road in Headingley. The children had a fantastic time and it was a real treat for them to visit the cinema with all of their friends! A huge thank you to Mrs Brosnan for organising!

In maths we have been continuing with column addition. We have focused on exchanging to the tens and hundreds column and regrouping them. We have used place value counters and deines to help us and challenged ourselves with some word problems. We have also been practicing our bar modelling and the children are becoming more confident in this.

In Maths this week, Year 4 have been learning all about two-step worded problems. Although these can be very tricky, Miss Evans and Miss Bennett have been blown away by the children’s resilience and logical reasoning to help them calculate answers. Today, Miss Bennett’s class became shop keepers for the day. They chose items and calculated change based on different scenarios, using addition and subtraction to do this. This week in Miss Evans’ maths group, the children did some activities around the vocabulary used in multi-step problems. They started by completing a matching activity where they had to sort words according to their corresponding calculation – for example, decrease is the same as subtraction. Then, they looked at two step problems and identified the vocabulary used in the question. They used this to write down whether each step would involve an addition or a subtraction calculation.

It is anti- bullying week this week, and in celebration, LKS2 have been thinking all about friendships. We have thought lots about respect in friendships, specifically what makes a good friend and how we should treat, or expect to be treated by our friends.

In science this week, we learnt all about how fossils are formed! To start with, we matched lots of dinosaurs with their fossils, before creating a comic strip explaining how fossils are formed. We will use these to help us make our own fossils in our next science lesson!
