LKS2 – Newsletter – 23.4.21

It has been a great first week back in LKS2.

We have taken full advantage of the sunny weather.

In maths this week, Miss Boyd’s class took part in numerous outdoor games. First, they worked on their instant recall of the 7 times table, writing their answers on their whiteboards. They focused on key facts such as multiplication being commutative and how they can get a times table answer from other facts they know already. Then, they played a game using hoops and numbered balls. Their aim was to work as a team to find the answer to inverse division facts following the 7x table on the balls and run to put it in the hoop. Finally, they consolidated their knowledge with a game called Count Out using the 7 x table.

In Mr Gamble’s maths, they looked at developing their efficient mental methods for multiplying. This involved using multiplication cards and counters to create arrays, looking at how many different ways we can represent a calculation (commutativity). This allowed them to see multiplication is repeated addition.

Class 5 have been working hard on their times tables this week. They have really impressed Miss Evans with their commitment to learning their 6s and 7s, and have thoroughly enjoyed lots of times tables games and activities. Some children also created arrays with counters to consolidate the 6s and 7s and to explore commutativity.

In English, we have moved onto our new topic of the Romans and have been learning all about homophones and how they should be used in sentences. We have been introduced to our new class text and have all worked incredibly hard to pick the correct spelling of each homophone and used them well in a sentence.

In PSHE, we have been learning about changes that can happen throughout our lifetimes and how to deal with this change. We have discussed how change is natural and how we can’t always stop it from happening. We then moved onto learning about various family dynamics/ structures and how families can also go through change. We finalised the lesson by reflecting on what makes our own family special.

Yesterday, we started a brand new topic in Science, all about the human skeleton and muscles. We learned that together they have three main functions; support, movement and protection. The children had a go at labelling a skeleton, and then we discussed the major bones and their scientific names. Then in pairs the children cut out bones and arranged them into a skeleton, labelling the bones from memory! Finally, they completed a human skeleton quiz on Purple Mash.

In P.E. we have been learning various football skills. In groups, we completed 5 various activities all focusing on a skill used in football. The skills we focused on were shooting, dribbling, passing, overhead throwing and turning with a ball.

Well done to our Learnatics this week, you have all worked super hard!

Keep it up everyone!

IMPORTANT NOTICES

  • A reminder for Class 5 about swimming this Wednesday, please remember kit.
  • We will be on the field for lunch times next week, however due to the improvement in the weather, your child does not need a second pair of shoes.
  • Due to the increased heat and sun this week, please remember to send your child with sun protection (sun hat, sun cream, water bottle etc.)

Have a great weekend,
