LKS2 – Roman Forts – Forest School

In Forest School today LKS2 pupils transformed into Romans! We began by looking at an important aspect of the Roman Empire’s success – teamwork. We played two games, both with a competitive edge, which focused on encouragement, working together and effective communication. We discussed how and why teams won the games and how other teams could improve to be more like the Romans! Next, we looked at loose parts and reminded ourselves of what they were, how they can be used and where to find them. Finally, pupils had to combine the skills from both activities to take on the ultimate challenge – to build a Roman Fort out of loose parts! Groups of children became Roman soldiers who had just landed in Britain. After studying plans and features of Roman forts, they set to work to think of the best site, materials and layout; all the while thinking about defense, ease of access, access to resources, line of sight and so on! There were some fantastic creations! At the end, we reviewed and reflected on our successes and failures through some mature and sensible discussions.
