It has been a fantastic first week back after half-term break in Reception. The children have enjoyed exploring our new topic of Toys, and this week have been introduced to lots of ‘old’ toys, including some special childhood toys of the teachers (some older than others!). Electronic toys and devices have been banished to allow the children to explore some more traditional toys and games.
Our Phonics sessions this week have been spent revisiting and revising the phonemes (letter sounds) we have learned so far. The children listened to identify the letter sounds in words and songs; practiced writing the letters with good formation; and sought out ways to blend these letter sounds into simple words.
In Maths, we have been investigating the numbers 1, 2 and 3. The children have rehearsed quickly subitising these numbers and investigated different ways to make and present these numbers.
Thursday was our Forest Schools session and we all enjoyed a glorious sunny day in the school gardens. We took full advantage of the beautiful autumn colours to search for leaves of differing colours, sizes and shapes. We counted, compared and examined these leaves, and examined trees closely to locate where each leaf had fallen from. We took a mountain of specially chosen leaves back to the classroom to create some marvelous ‘transient’ artworks using these natural materials.
On Friday we learned about the Hindu festival of Diwali and some children chose to create rangoli patterns and make lovely Diwali greetings cards.
Have a lovely weekend!
