Wellbeing Wednesday – Forest School
Today in Forest School the sessions were all about animals! With the start of National Nestbox Week on Friday, pupils in KS2 had a crash course on birdhouses. This included studying an example, using search engines to research when and where to put them up as well as the different types and sizes available. We also found out the range of species which use bird boxes and, we hope, will be attracted to the school grounds by the new nestboxes. After that, pupils opened a nest box used last Spring to discover a used Great Tit nest followed by a site survey of where we can safely install more bird boxes using the information we researched earlier. To finish with, pupils in KS2 had a go at willow weaving. They experimented first, learning how to bend, shape and wrap willow before being able to take their learning their own way. Children made fishing rods and fish, hearts to fit in with Valentine’s Day, a magic star wand whilst Mr Gamble weaved a princess! Pupils in KS1 focused on the animals we have already in our school garden area. First, we checked on the chickens. We looked carefully to see if they needed any water or food before collecting their eggs and placing them in the office for sale. We also visited the goats and fed them a tasty snack of pine needles as well as hay and their lunch made up of goat mix, oats and sugar beet.
